Biopics have become something of
a punchline at award shows: all it takes is for an actor to pile on some pounds
and learn a few tics to get a Best Actor nomination and the Best Film/Director/Screenplay/etc.
categories will follow suit, despite the fact most biopics stick to a derivative
formula. The Theory of Everything
could’ve easily churned out a rose-tinted rise and fall narrative, but instead
focuses on the unique love story between Stephen Hawking and his wife Jane
Wilde. Eddie Redmayne deserves kudos for his physical transformation into the
renowned physicist, but Felicity Jones arguably has the tougher role, a woman
torn between her own feelings and an unwavering loyalty to her husband.
Heart-breaking and brutally honest.
